Sydney, a native of Australia, was born in Schreppler, a suburb of Perth, to parents Tokyo (a native of Cork, Ireland) and Stockholm (of Morocco) on an abnormally dry August night in 1889. Abhorring the dry air and sensing her time had not truly come, she immediately crawled into her mother's pouch, where she would stay for the next 99 years, a "postgestation" period nearly 3 times the duration of the average Australian child of that era. Her ultimate entry into the world was accompanied by fanfare and bugle calls, though this is only because her emergence happened during the final stretch of a horse race that her mother had been attending.
