Rowan Duim has received an NDSEG Fellowship! The DoD, through the Office of the Under Secretary for Research and Engineering and the military services, promotes education in science and engineering disciplines relevant to the Defense mission. One means of promoting science and engineering education is through awarding fellowships to encourage promising U.S. scientists to pursue doctoral degrees in designated research disciplines. Learn more about the NDSEG Fellowship here. Congrats Rowan!
July 2022: Malte Schwarz, Rowan Duim, and Shao-Wen Chang awarded the H2H8 Graduate Research Grant to Advance Humanity
The E9 graduate students have each won research awards from the H2H8 Association to support their quantum simulation research. H2H8 is a Bay Area nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting science that deepens our understanding of the world and leads humanity towards a better future. Their research awards acknowledge graduate students in physical and mathematical sciences at UC Berkeley who are dedicated to advancing humanity.

April 2022: Postdoc Charles D. Brown has accepted an Assistant Professorship at Yale
Postdoc Charles D. Brown has accepted an Assistant Professor position at Yale University beginning in January 2023.
April 2022: Postdoc Charles D. Brown Awarded the Chancellor's Award
Congratulations to Charles D. Brown, who was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Civic Engagement. The Chancellor’s Awards for Public Service honor individuals and groups for their exceptional commitment to advancing social change through public service, a pillar of the university’s public mission. The Civic Engagement Award recognizes an individual undergraduate student, graduate student, student group or staff for their contributions to the community. Read more about the award here.
March 2022: Postdoc Josh Isaacs leaves Ultracold, joins Eikon Therapeutics
Postdoc Josh Isaacs has left Ultracold and is joining Eikon Therapeutics in Hayward, California.
Sept 2021: Postdocs Emily Davis and Charles D. Brown II win Quantum Creators Prize
The University of Chicago and the Chicago Quantum Exchange is holding the first annual “Quantum Creators Prize Symposium”, which recognizes the achievements of early career researchers in the broad areas of quantum science and engineering. The symposium takes place, virtually, on September 29-30, 2021. Postdocs Emily Davis (Yao group) and Charles D. Brown II (Stamper-Kurn group) both received the Prize and gave fascinating talks on many-body noise in an interacting dipolar spin system, and topological properties of band structure, respectively. Congratulations to Emily and Charles!

June 2021: Visiting Scholar Samuel Huber returns to University of Wurzburg
During his stay, Samuel worked on several aspects of the E8 apparatus - from constructing lasers for optical pumping to setting up wavelength and light spectrum analyzers. His largest contribution was this locking of the MSquared Ti:Saph laser to a ULE cavity using only a Red Pitaya FPGA device and the PyRPL software package. This gave us an absolute frequency reference for our titanium cooling laser, an essential part in our effort to laser cool titanium.
May 2021: Dr. Zephy Leung leaves Ultracold, joins Mammoth Biosciences
Dr. Zephy Leung has left the Ultracold group after briefly staying as a postdoc post-graduation and is headed to Brisbane, California, to join Mammoth Biosciences.
May 2021: Lely Tran, Pi2 scholar, joins group
Lely Tran will work as a researcher in the Ultracold group exploring ruthenium spectroscopy by setting up a vapor cell and characterizing transitions suited for various scientific purposes. Lely will be mentored by graduate student Diego Novoa.
